By default, any learner will be awarded a certificate for a certification where they complete/pass any of the awarding (or renewing) items. If you have a requirement to control who can attain a certification, you can use the certification eligibility feature. Certification eligibility enables you to restrict the cohort of users who can be awarded a certificate for a certifications.
When enabled, certification eligibility is split into two cohorts, those users who are eligible for the certification, and those users who are required to hold the certification. For the purpose of eligibility, both cohorts are eligible for the certification. Where certification eligibility is enabled, when a learner completes/passes any of the awarding content items, the learner's eligibility will be checked, if the learner is eligible then a certificate will be awarded. If the user is not eligible then no certificate will be awarded.
For learners who are eligible for a certification, the certification is always displayed in the learner portal regardless of if the learner has ever achieved the certification. Where the certification has never been achieved, a Start button will enable the learner to navigate directly to the awarding content item (where configured and properly targeted - this will not override content targeting).
In addition to initial award of a certificate for a certification, eligibility also impacts renewal of a certification. When a learner already holds a certificate for a certification, which is configured to expire, the learner will only be prompted to renew the certification if they are eligible. As a result, if they were eligible at the point of initial award but have subsequently lost eligibility (for example due to changing roles or responsibilities), while they will be able to view the expiring/expired certificate in the learner portal, they will not be sent any emails prompting them to renew the certificate, and they will not be able to renew the certification, regardless of if they have access to and complete/pass the renewing item. In the learner portal no Renew button will be displayed for expiring certifications where the learner is no longer eligible for the certification.
Certification eligibility allows you to have multiple certifications, each with different expiry and renewal options, but driven from the same awarding content item. This can be important where different cohorts are required to certify on a different periodic basis. For example, in a clinical environment, you might have a hand washing certification, that needs to be completed every six months by clinical staff, but only annually by administration staff. In this case, you could have two certifications, both driven from the same handwashing course, but the mandatory and eligible cohorts would be different for each certification.
