What are categories?
You use categories to organise related sets of content within the Civica catalogue. Learners can use categories to quickly locate content that relates to different subject types, by applying category filters. Content administrators use categories to help manage and organise the catalogue.
In the following example, three categories Leadership, Health & Safety and Induction have been used to organise content. You can choose and configure category names that make sense for you in your domain.
Filtering using categories
When viewing the catalogue of content within either the Web learner portal or mobile learning Apps, learners are able to apply category filters to quickly drill down into specific sets of content.
What are channels?
Channels provide another way to group related sets of content together. Channels (and the content contained within them) are accessed from the Web learner portal home page and from the home page of the Civica Apps. Channels are also referred to as hidden categories because to create a channel, you create a category and then mark it as hidden. As well as turning the category into a channel, this also ensures that the hidden category does not appear within the Web learner portal and App category filters.
In the above example, there are four regular categories and one hidden category or channel:
- Category A
- Category B
- Category C
- Category D
- Support Materials (a hidden category or channel)
When a learner accesses the Support Materials channel from the home page of their Web learner portal or App, they are presented with the content set tagged with the Support Materials hidden category. Because some content tagged with the Support Materials hidden category is also tagged with Category A and Category B, these regular categories will also be available as filters. In this way, users can filter content within a specified channel.
How are channels presented?
Channels are presented either as fixed tiles, or by using channel widgets on the Web learner portal interface, as shown below.
In the following example, buttons are used to provide access to three channels called Digital Learning, Action Based Learning, Support Materials and Discussion Forum.
